Keney Park Entrance Text

Keney Park is one of the largest designed landscapes in the United States, composing of 684 acres. It includes 584 acres in Hartford and 110 acres in Windsor. Keney Park is one of the nation’s oldest parks in the City of Hartford. It was an initial gift of 533 acres by investor and wholesale
grocer, Henry Keney, to the City of Hartford in 1894, and it expanded the City’s then emerging park system. On August 18, 1924 the 533 acres of initial land was deemed ready and presentable for transfer to the City, as directed in Keney’s will. Keney Park was designed by the landscape architectural firm of Olmsted, Olmsted and Eliot. Frederic Olmsted is called ‘a father of landscape architecture’ in the U.S. Keney Park was intentionally designed to be a “truly sylvan pastoral landscape.” Over time, it has been enjoyed by generations of Hartford families and visitors, providing not only neighborhood recreation in a historic designed landscape, but also ecologically rich environments. The park’s natural look was designed as a series of typical regional landscapes, including meadows and forests.
